Who We Are

About the Project

BalikGabayan was created to bridge emotional distance between OFW parents and their children through storytelling and interactive engagement. Rooted in research and empathy, it provides tools that support open communication, emotional expression, and family connection even from afar.

Why BalikGabayan?

The name BalikGabayan comes from the Filipino words ‘balikbayan’ (returning home), ‘balik’ (return), and ‘gabayan’ (to guide), symbolizing the return of emotional presence and meaningful guidance to children, no matter the distance.

Our Findings

Our research shows that the quality of parent–child relationships before and during parental absence is the strongest determinant of how children cope with and interpret the OFW experience. Consistent communication bridges emotional security and understanding which reduces negative assumptions, distance, or resentment, while its limited presence can influence a child’s self-identity, friendships, and openness to others.

Our Goals

Bring Awareness

To shed light on the emotional experiences of left-behind children of OFWs and how parental presence shapes their well-being.

Bridge the Distance

To create a space that strengthens the emotional and relational bond between OFW parents and their children.

Bind Our Hearts

To nurture open conversation, emotional expression, and meaningful interaction within the family.
